Operation of the NGU is simple. First, coalescing filters remove the particulate and oil that are in compressed air. The air is then conveyed to the hollow membrane fibers, which separate the nitrogen from the other gases. As the compressed air is fed into the separators that contain the fibers; the oxygen, water, and carbon dioxide permeate through the walls of the fiber, and then are collected and vented to the atmosphere. The nitrogen stream then exits the other end of the separator.
